Schramm: Portrait of a Serial Killer

Horror  Germany

Schramm is a German horror film directed by Jรถrg Buttgereit. Lothar Schramm, the protagonist, is a seemingly innocuous taxi driver living alone in his apartment. However, he is a highly disturbed individual who indulges in frequent fantasies that become increasingly violent as the movie progresses. He has a history of mental illness and is on medication for it.

The film is a character study of sorts, following Schramm over the course of a few days as he wallows in his own delusions, experiences flashes of rage and violence, and gradually loses any semblance of control over his actions. He struggles to connect with other people, particularly women, and is haunted by memories of a past relationship that ended in tragedy.

One of Schramm's coping mechanisms is to take photographs of himself engaged in various sadomasochistic acts, which he then sends to a former girlfriend. He also repeatedly drugs and rapes women he picks up in his taxi, ultimately murdering them and leaving their bodies in grotesque positions.

The movie is shot in a gritty, low-budget style and has been praised for its effective use of sound and lighting to create a mood of unease and tension. It is not for the faint of heart, featuring explicit violence and sexual content throughout.
