Charlie Simms is a diligent and honest student who is struggling to pay his tuition fees. He works part-time by performing odd jobs in the school, such as photocopying, cleaning the floor, and driving cars. During Thanksgiving break, the headmaster assigns him to take care of Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade, a blind and irascible veteran who has a reputation for being difficult to handle.
At first, Charlie is reluctant to take the job, but he desperately needs the money. He meets Slade at his home in New York City, where he lives with his niece and her family. Slade is abrupt and rude to Charlie, but the young man remains patient and polite. Over time, they develop an unlikely friendship, as Slade helps Charlie gain confidence and experience in life.
Slade takes Charlie on a trip to New York City, where they stay at a luxurious hotel and attend a dance party. Slade teaches Charlie how to dance and how to make a good impression on women. Charlie also learns about Slade's past, including his military career and the incident that left him blind. Slade's experiences and wisdom inspire Charlie to appreciate life and make the most of his opportunities.
As the weekend progresses, Charlie becomes more attached to Slade, and Slade becomes more dependent on Charlie's company. However, their happiness is short-lived, as Slade decides to commit suicide by shooting himself. Charlie intervenes and convinces Slade to change his mind, by reminding him of the people who love and depend on him. In the end, Slade reconciles with his niece, and Charlie returns home with a newfound appreciation for life and the value of relationships.
