Scary Movie is a 2000 American parody film directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans and written by Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Buddy Johnson, Phil Beauman, and Jason Friedberg. The film parodies popular horror films and franchises, as well as some comedic classics.
The plot follows a group of teenagers who accidentally hit a man with their car and proceed to cover up the incident. However, they soon find themselves being terrorized by a masked killer, and it becomes apparent that they are being targeted for their involvement in the hit-and-run. As they try to uncover the killer's identity and plot their escape, they come face-to-face with absurd situations and hilarious parodies of popular horror films.
Throughout the movie, the characters are put into ridiculous and over-the-top situations, referencing iconic moments from movies such as Scream, The Sixth Sense, and The Blair Witch Project. The film also pokes fun at cultural references of the time, such as the rise of internet usage and the popularity of boy bands.
Scary Movie was a commercial success, grossing over $278 million worldwide. It spawned four sequels, each continuing the trend of poking fun at popular horror films and cultural references.
