Say Anything... is a 1989 romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Cameron Crowe. The movie revolves around the burgeoning relationship between Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack), an underachieving, optimistic kickboxer, and Diane Court (Ione Skye), a valedictorian and aspiring environmentalist. The two meet and fall for each other shortly before high school graduation.
While Diane's father, Jim Court (John Mahoney), is pleased with his daughter's achievements, he is overprotective and controlling, with a history of involvement in white-collar crime. He disapproves of Lloyd and does everything in his power to keep them apart. Despite the obstacles, Lloyd and Diane's relationship deepens as they try to navigate their respective futures.
The iconic scene of the movie shows Lloyd holding up a boombox outside of Diane's window, playing Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." In this scene, Lloyd expresses his love and devotion to Diane, causing her to realize that she too was in love with him.
As the summer progresses, Diane's impending departure for a scholarship program in England looms over the couple. Jim also becomes increasingly tense as the IRS investigates his embezzlement, jeopardizing his financial future and political career.
The film reaches its climax when Lloyd and Diane confront Jim about his wrongdoing. In the end, Lloyd convinces Diane to let him go and pursue her dreams, even though it means they must part ways.
Say Anything... was considered a commercial success and has since become a seminal film in pop culture. The screenplay was nominated for a Bafta Award for Best Original Screenplay and is responsible for popularizing the expression "the triumph of hope over experience."
