Sarkar is a 2018 Tamil-language political action thriller film directed by A.R. Murugadoss and produced by Kalanithi Maran under the banner of Sun Pictures. The story revolves around NRI corporate Sundar Ramasamy (Vijay), who visits India to cast his vote but discovers that his vote has already been cast illegally. He takes the legal route to reclaim his rights and ends up exposing the corrupt system that runs the state. He also comes to know that his vote wasn't cast by accident, and there is a well-oiled network working behind the scenes to manipulate election results.
As Sundar tries to bring the culprits to justice, he faces numerous obstacles, including threats to his life, physical assault, and kidnapping. However, he doesn't back down and instead decides to fight the system from within by launching his political party and contesting in the elections.
Sarkar depicts the evils of the political system and underscores the power of an individual to bring about change. The film was released on 6 November 2018, coinciding with the Diwali festival, and received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. It went on to become a commercial success, grossing over ₹260 crore worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time.
