History,Drama  Japan

Sakuran is a 2006 film directed by Mika Ninagawa and based on the manga series of the same name by Moyoco Anno. The film follows the story of Kiyoha, a young girl who is sold into the red-light district of Yoshiwara in the early 18th century. After arriving at the Tamakiku house, Kiyoha (played by actress Anna Tsuchiya) is put under the care of the oiran Hanaogi (played by Yoshino Kimura).

Kiyoha is initially rebellious and challenges the traditional hierarchy of the house, but Hanaogi recognizes her potential and begins to train her to become a successful oiran.

As Kiyoha grows up, she becomes one of the Tamakiku house's top-ranking courtesans and gains the attention of influential men in society. However, she struggles with the societal expectations placed on her as an oiran and the limitations it imposes on her personal life. She also becomes involved in a complicated romantic relationship with a young customer named Sojiro (played by Kippei Shiina).

Sakuran is known for its vibrant and stylized visuals, featuring bold use of color and intricate costume design. The film also explores themes of gender roles, power dynamics, and the commodification of female beauty in traditional Japanese society.
