Running with Scissors is a dark comedy-drama film based on the memoir of the same name by Augusten Burroughs. The film depicts the life of a young Augusten (played by Joseph Cross) as he navigates through his dysfunctional family life.

After his parents' divorce, Augusten's mother Deirdre (played by Annette Bening) becomes increasingly unstable and is admitted to a mental hospital. Augusten is then sent to live with his mother's therapist, Dr. Finch (played by Brian Cox), and his dysfunctional family. The Finch family is made up of a group of eccentric individuals who live in a dilapidated house and constantly engage in bizarre behavior.

As Augusten spends more time with the Finch family, he begins to unravel the secrets and dysfunction that exist within the household. He learns about Dr. Finch's relationship with his wife Agnes (played by Jill Clayburgh), who is battling breast cancer and has an ongoing affair with a fellow patient from the mental hospital. Augusten also develops a relationship with the Finch's adopted daughter, Natalie (played by Evan Rachel Wood), who struggles with her own mental health issues.

Throughout the film, Augusten struggles to define his own identity in the face of his family's dysfunction and the numerous challenges he encounters. The film is a powerful exploration of mental illness, the complexities of family dynamics, and the challenges of growing up in a chaotic environment.
