Running for Grace is a 2018 drama film directed by David L. Cunningham. The story takes place in the early 20th century in Hawaii and follows the journey of a young orphan boy named Jo, who is of mixed race. Jo runs like the wind and dreams of one day becoming a doctor.
One day, a new white village doctor named Doc arrives in town, and Jo begins working for him as his assistant. Doc sees potential in Jo and teaches him how to read and write. Jo also learns about medicine and helps Doc distribute medicine to the coffee pickers who work in the mountainous region.
While on an errand to deliver medicine, Jo meets the daughter of the plantation owner, a young girl named Grace. Despite the racial divide and the disapproval of Grace's father, Jo and Grace fall in love. The two must navigate the obstacles presented by their families, society's expectations, and their own uncertain futures.
As their love blossoms, Jo's past comes back to haunt him, endangering everything he holds dear. Jo must face his past and fight for the life and love he wants for himself and with Grace.
