In the movie Runaway Bride, Ike's offensive column about Maggie Carpenter (played by Julia Roberts) becomes national news and damages her reputation as she is now known as the "runaway bride." As a result, she loses her job as a kindergarten teacher and her fiancé leaves her. In an attempt to salvage her reputation, Maggie agrees to have Ike (played by Richard Gere) follow her around in preparation for her next wedding, in exchange for a feature story in his newspaper.
As Ike spends more time with Maggie, he begins to see her in a different light and becomes intrigued by her habit of running away from the altar. Together, they explore why she can't seem to commit to marriage and why she continues to run away. Along the way, they fall in love and Maggie finally faces her fear of commitment as she walks down the aisle with Ike.
The film also stars Joan Cusack as Maggie's best friend and Hector Elizondo as Ike's editor. Runaway Bride was directed by Garry Marshall and was released in 1999. It was a box office success, grossing over $300 million worldwide.
