Rudy Ruettiger is the youngest of 14 siblings and grows up in Joliet, Illinois. His father works at a steel mill, and Rudy is expected to follow in his footsteps. However, Rudy has a passion for football and idolizes Notre Dame's Fighting Irish football team. Despite lacking the size and athleticism of a typical football player, Rudy dreams of playing for the Fighting Irish.
After struggling in high school, Rudy moves to Notre Dame's hometown of South Bend, Indiana, to attend a junior college and improve his grades. With the help of a priest, Father Cavanaugh, Rudy is able to gain admission to Notre Dame, but he still struggles to make the football team.
With perseverance and dedication, Rudy finally earns a spot as a practice player for the Fighting Irish. He works tirelessly and becomes an inspiration to his teammates, who vote to allow him to dress for the final home game of the season. Rudy finally takes the field as a Fighting Irish player and has a memorable performance, sacking the quarterback on his last play. His teammates carry him off the field in celebration, and Rudy achieves his dream of playing for Notre Dame.
