Calvin is played by Paul Dano, while Ruby is played by Zoe Kazan, who also wrote the screenplay. The movie was directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who were also responsible for the Oscar-winning film "Little Miss Sunshine."
The plot revolves around Calvin's struggles with writing and relationships. He is haunted by the success of his debut novel, which he wrote at a very young age, and he feels as though he has never been able to live up to that standard again. Meanwhile, he is also struggling with his love life, having recently broken up with his girlfriend.
Calvin creates the character of Ruby as a way to break free from his writer's block. He is deeply inspired by this free-spirited woman, who is full of life and vitality. As he continues to write about her, he finds himself falling in love with her, even though she is just a fictional character.
But then something inexplicable happens. Ruby begins to appear in the real world, as if she has come to life. Calvin is overjoyed at first, but he soon realizes that he has no control over her or her actions. He begins to worry that he has created a monster, and that he is responsible for all the chaos that ensues.
Throughout the movie, Calvin struggles to come to terms with the fact that Ruby is real, and that he is not in control of her. He also grapples with his own feelings of inadequacy as a writer and a lover. The movie explores themes of creativity, reality, control, and the power of imagination.
