Rubin Farr (Crispin Glover) is a reclusive man living in a cluttered, eccentric apartment in Salt Lake City, Utah. He spends his days listening to obscure music, talking to his pet cat, and obsessively painting a large canvas of a buried head. Ed Tuttle (Howard Hesseman) is a pushy, but ultimately unsuccessful multi-level marketing salesman who approaches Rubin with an offer to sell him overpriced cleaning products.
After an awkward encounter, Ed discovers that Rubin's cat has died and offers to help him bury it in the "perfect spot." Despite Rubin's reluctance, the two men embark on a bizarre road trip across the Utah desert to find a suitable burial place.
Along the way, they encounter Ed's bitter ex-wife, Rula (Karen Black), who becomes increasingly volatile and aggressive towards both men. They also encounter a mysterious and elusive Andy Warhol critic (Michael Greene) who claims to have found the perfect spot to bury Rubin's cat.
As they continue their odd journey, Ed and Rubin's personalities clash, and they struggle to come to terms with their own personal demons. Rubin becomes increasingly fixated on his art and the buried head on his canvas, while Ed's past mistakes continue to haunt him.
The film is a quirky and surreal exploration of self-discovery, obsession, and the search for meaning in an increasingly fragmented world.
