Rouge is a 1988 Hong Kong romantic film directed by Stanley Kwan and stars Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung. The movie tells a story of Fleur, a courtesan in 1930s Hong Kong who falls in love with a wealthy young man named Chan Chen-Pang. Their love is forbidden, and they plan to elope, but their plan is foiled, and Fleur dies tragically.
Fifty-three years later, Fleur's ghost returns to modern-day Hong Kong to reunite with Chan. Chan is now an old man, and his daughter, who is a television actress, is skeptical of Fleur's presence. Fleur finds out that Chan never married, and his lifelong love for her has kept him single. She also discovers that her daughter is Chan's biological daughter, as she was conceived before Fleur's death.
Fleur's ghost continues to haunt Chan, and they frequently revisit their love story and reminisce about their past. Meanwhile, Chan's daughter decides to help Fleur find closure by performing a traditional Chinese ritual to help her move on to the afterlife. Through this process, Fleur discovers the truth about her death and finds peace in the afterlife.
Rouge explores themes of love, loss, and the impermanence of life. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning multiple awards, including Best Film at the Hong Kong Film Awards. It is considered a classic of Hong Kong cinema and is often cited as one of the greatest films in the history of Chinese-language cinema.
