Rogue Male is a 1976 film adaptation of the novel by Geoffrey Household. The film stars Peter O'Toole as Sir Robert Thorndyke, the aristocratic Englishman who attempts to assassinate Adolf Hitler, played by Ray Smith. The film is directed by Clive Donner and also stars Alastair Sim, John Standing, and Harold Pinter.
The story takes place in the months leading up to World War II, where Sir Robert, an avid hunter, manages to sneak into Hitler's Bavarian retreat and take aim at him with a high powered rifle. However, his shot misses and he is captured by the Gestapo, who torture him and leave him for dead. Despite his injuries, Sir Robert manages to escape and make his way back to England.
Back in England, Sir Robert discovers that the Gestapo has followed him and is now hunting him down. Fearing that his own government will turn him over to the Germans, Sir Robert goes into hiding in the English countryside, using his skills as a hunter and survivalist to stay alive. However, the Gestapo is relentless, and Sir Robert must rely on his intelligence and wits to outsmart them.
As the chase continues, Sir Robert meets a variety of colorful characters, including a poacher named Quive-Smith (played by Pinter) and a mysterious woman named Melissa (played by Patricia Lawrence), who may or may not be working for the Germans.
Rogue Male is a tense and thrilling film that explores themes of survival, betrayal, and patriotism. It boasts strong performances by all the actors, particularly O'Toole, who brings a sense of nobility and intelligence to his role as Sir Robert.
