The film is set in the 1190s, several years after the end of the Third Crusade. Robin Hood (played by Sean Connery) and Little John (played by Nicol Williamson) return to England to find that their beloved Sherwood Forest is now a shadow of its former self. The once-great band of Merry Men has disbanded, and the people of Nottinghamshire are living in fear of the brutal Sheriff of Nottingham (played by Robert Shaw).
Robin has aged and is no longer the dashing hero he once was. He is now a tired, introspective man who wonders whether his life's work was worth it. He finds solace in his reunion with his old flame, Maid Marian (played by Audrey Hepburn), who has become a nun. Marian is initially reluctant to rekindle her romance with Robin, as she has dedicated her life to God. However, the two eventually rediscover their love for each other.
Meanwhile, the Sheriff is plotting to take over Sherwood Forest once and for all. He hires a band of ruthless mercenaries to kill Robin and his men, but Robin and his old comrades are determined to fight back. They are aided by a group of peasants who have been inspired by Robin's legendary exploits.
The final battle between Robin and the Sheriff is a tense, thrilling affair. In the end, Robin emerges victorious, but at a great cost. Marian dies while tending to the wounded, and Robin himself is mortally wounded. In a bittersweet final scene, he dies in the arms of Little John, having done one last great deed for the people of Sherwood Forest.
