The protagonist of the story is a man named Richard Burton, who is resurrected on Riverworld along with his wife, Isabel. However, when he discovers that Isabel has been resurrected in another part of the river, he sets out on a journey to find her, encountering various other historical figures, such as Mark Twain, Tom Mix, and Sir Francis Drake, along the way.
As Burton and his companions navigate Riverworld, they must contend with various dangers, including hostile tribes of people, giant sea serpents, and rogue androids. They also discover that the river is controlled by a mysterious entity known as "The Ethicals," who may hold the key to unlocking the secrets of this strange afterlife.
Over the course of the movie, Burton begins to unravel the mystery of Riverworld and his own past, while also grappling with the philosophical implications of life after death. Ultimately, he must decide whether to remain in this bizarre world or try to find a way back to the life he left behind.
