After testing the serum on the apes, Will's boss, Steven Jacobs, orders the project to be shut down due to financial concerns. In the chaos of shutting down the project, Will takes Caesar home with him. Caesar begins to display increased intelligence and develops the ability to communicate with humans through sign language.
However, Caesar's newfound intelligence and his mistreatment by humans cause him to rebel against his captivity, and he leads an uprising of genetically enhanced apes against their human oppressors.
As the conflict between humans and apes escalates, Will struggles to find a way to reconcile his love for Caesar with his responsibility to protect humanity from the apes' advance. In the end, Caesar and his followers establish their own society in the redwood forests of Northern California, while the human survivors of the conflict face an uncertain future in a world that has forever changed.
