Rise is a documentary film that tells the inspiring story of the Antetokounmpo family, who fled Nigeria in search of a better life in Greece. Upon arriving in Greece, Vera and Charles Antetokounmpo struggled to make ends meet, working long hours in low-paying jobs while living in a cramped apartment with their five children.
Despite the challenges they faced, the Antetokounmpos held onto their dream of obtaining Greek citizenship so that they could build a better life for their family. However, they soon realized that the Greek legal system made it nearly impossible for immigrants to become citizens. They were constantly thwarted by bureaucratic red tape, discrimination, and racism.
Despite these challenges, the Antetokounmpos refused to give up hope. They instilled a strong work ethic and sense of determination in their children, who all inherited their parents' incredible athleticism. Three of their sons - Giannis, Thanasis, and Kostas - went on to become NBA stars, each with their unique stories of perseverance and triumph.
Rise tells the story of the Antetokounmpos' incredible journey, from their humble beginnings in Nigeria to their rise to fame in the United States. Through interviews with family members, friends, and experts, the film sheds light on the struggles faced by immigrants and people of color in Greece and the United States, while celebrating the power of resilience, sacrifice, and community.
