The man's name is Tom Ripley, an American expat and art forger living in London. His friend and fellow artist, Derwatt, has just died under mysterious circumstances, leaving behind a lucrative art market that Ripley decides to exploit.
Ripley creates a fake identity for Derwatt and starts producing a series of paintings, claiming they are posthumous works by the deceased artist. He creates a buzz in the art world and even manages to get the paintings exhibited in a prestigious gallery.
However, things start to go wrong when some of Derwatt's former associates start to question the authenticity of the paintings. Moreover, a journalist starts investigating Derwatt's death and comes dangerously close to revealing the truth behind the scam.
Ripley is forced to use all his wits and cunning to stay one step ahead of his enemies and outwit the authorities. But as the lies and the deceptions pile up, it becomes clear that Ripley's obsession with money and fame has blinded him to the consequences of his actions.
In the end, Ripley's greed and amorality lead to his downfall, as he realizes too late the tragic cost of his artful machinations.
