Sydney Miller is a fourteen-year-old girl from Chicago who is sent to Hawaii to live with her estranged father after her mother passes away in a surfing accident. Her father owns a surfboard shop on the island, and Sydney hardly knows him, having seen him only a few times in her life.
When Sydney arrives on the island, she is initially apprehensive about living in a new place with her father. However, as she begins to explore the island and its culture, she starts to develop a closer relationship with him.
Sydney gets involved with a group of locals who hang out at her father's surf shop, including Gia, Kona, and Val. They teach her how to surf and introduce her to the Hawaiian way of life. Sydney discovers her passion for photography and begins to take stunning photos of the island's landscapes and people.
The group of friends plan to enter a surf competition at the Rip Curl Pro, but Sydney's father is opposed to her surfing. Despite his objections, Sydney decides to enter the competition. During the competition, Sydney and her friends discover that the island is in danger of being turned into a resort by a wealthy developer. They work together to find a way to save the island and preserve its natural beauty.
As Sydney fights to save her newfound home, she also discovers the truth about her mother's death. She learns that her mother was a talented surfer who died while trying to catch a dangerous wave. Through her experiences on the island, Sydney is able to come to terms with her mother's death and embrace the beauty of Hawaii and its culture.
