Blu is a blue macaw and has been living in Minnesota with Linda, who is his owner and best friend. Linda is a bookstore owner who has raised Blu from the time he was a small hatchling. Blu is unable to fly, which is unusual for a bird like him, and he has never been outside of his comfortable domesticated life.
Meanwhile, in Rio de Janeiro, a female blue macaw named Jewel is living an adventurous life in the wild. Jewel is spirited and free, and she dreams of flying away to new places. She is captured by smugglers who plan to sell her to the highest bidder. Jewel manages to escape from their clutches, but she knows she can never let her guard down again.
Blu and Jewel's paths cross when Linda takes Blu to Rio to meet Jewel. Linda hopes that Jewel will help Blu learn to fly and see the world beyond Minnesota. However, the smugglers soon capture Blu and Jewel, and Linda is left to find them with the help of a group of street-smart birds.
Blu and Jewel manage to escape from the smugglers, but they are on the run and hiding from them. Along the way, they meet various birds who come to their aid, including a toucan named Rafael, a cardinal named Pedro, and a canary named Nico. They also face many challenges and dangers, including escaping from a burning illegal logging site, dodging monkeys, and narrowly avoiding a plane crash.
Finally, Blu and Jewel make it back to Linda, and they all return to Minnesota together. Blu learns to fly, and he and Jewel start a family. They realize that while their lives are different, they have become a family and that is all that matters.
