Betrayal and Heist: Tony's Revenge on Pierre

Drama,Action,Crime  France

Rififi is a French crime film directed by Jules Dassin and released in 1955. The film is renowned for its 30-minute heist sequence, which is entirely devoid of dialogue or music. The heist scene is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most suspenseful in film history.

The film revolves around the character of Tony le Stéphanois, a former thief who has just been released from prison after serving a five-year sentence. Tony is warned by the police to stay away from any criminal activities, but he is tempted back into the world of crime when he learns that his former lover, Mado, has become the girlfriend of a local gangster named Pierre Grutter.

Tony's friend Jo offers him a job that involves stealing some jewels from a jewelry store. Tony initially declines the offer but changes his mind when he realizes that the job could help him win back Mado.

Tony assembles a team of criminals, including Jo, César, and Mario, and they meticulously plan the heist. They manage to break into the jewelry store without triggering the alarm and successfully steal the jewels.

However, things start to go wrong when one of the gang members gets cold feet and starts to panic. As the group tries to flee, they are pursued by both the police and Grutter's henchmen. The final act of the movie is a tense and violent showdown between the gang members, the police, and Grutter's men.

Rififi was widely praised for its realistic portrayal of the criminal underworld and its innovative use of silence in the heist scene. The movie was a massive critical and commercial success in France and helped to establish Jules Dassin as one of the leading directors of the French New Wave movement.
