Alan sets off on his hitchhiking journey, encountering a number of strange and unsettling characters along the way. He eventually hitches a ride with a mysterious and ominous looking man, George Staub (David Arquette), who reveals to Alan that he is actually the Grim Reaper and that he has come to collect Alan's soul. Alan refuses to go with him and jumps out of the car, leaving Staub behind.
Alan eventually arrives at the hospital and finds his mother in a coma. He spends the night with her, reminiscing about their past and facing his fear of death. The next morning, Alan leaves the hospital and begins hitchhiking back to campus.
Along the way, he again encounters Staub, who now offers him a deal: if Alan can convince someone else to take his place, Staub will spare his life. Alan meets a man who is suicidal and convinces him to keep living, sacrificing himself to the Grim Reaper in his place.
In the end, Alan returns to campus and is reunited with Jessica, who is relieved to see him alive. The film ends with Alan, now with a better appreciation of life, painting a portrait of his mother.
