Ben Barber is a security guard at the local high school who wants to become a police officer. He has been dating Angela, James' sister, for a year and is ready to propose to her. James, a decorated detective with the Atlanta Police Department, sees Ben as an immature video game addict who is not capable of taking care of his sister.
To prove James wrong, Ben applies to the police academy and gets accepted. He believes that this will earn James' respect and approval for his marriage to Angela. However, James wants to test Ben's skills and takes him on a ride along. James designs the night to be the most challenging and frightening experience possible for Ben.
Throughout the night, Ben is repeatedly humiliated by James, but he eventually gains some confidence after taking down a criminal in a high-speed chase. However, this victory is short-lived. James receives a tip about a notorious criminal named Omar, who has been eluding the police for years. James wants to capture Omar, but when the duo confronts him, they are caught off-guard, and Omar escapes.
James is angry at Ben for putting himself and others in danger, but he later realizes that Ben's enthusiasm and ability to talk his way out of situations can be an asset to the police department. James eventually comes to respect Ben and gives him his blessing to marry Angela.
Ben and James work together to capture Omar, and in the end, Ben becomes a police officer and marries Angela. In the sequel, Ride Along 2, James and Ben go on another adventure to Miami to take down a drug lord.
