Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip is a filmed recording of Pryor's stand-up comedy performance at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles in 1982. The movie is a follow-up to Pryor's previous concert film, Richard Pryor: Live in Concert, which was released in 1979.
In the film, Pryor talks about a variety of subjects, including race relations, sex, and drug use. One of the central themes of his act is his own personal struggles with addiction. Pryor is open and honest about his use of drugs, including freebasing, and the toll that addiction has taken on his life.
Of particular note is Pryor's graphic and harrowing description of the night he caught on fire while freebasing cocaine in his home in 1980. He describes how the flames engulfed his body and how he had to run down the street in flames to get help. The incident left him with severe burns and he underwent extensive medical treatment.
