Rhinestone

Comedy  United States of America

In Rhinestone, the country singer in question is named Jake Farris (played by Dolly Parton), who arrogantly boasts at a press conference that she can turn anyone into a country star. A New York cab driver named Nick Martinelli (played by Sylvester Stallone) overhears her claims and accepts her challenge, believing he can sing just as well as anyone.

Jake brings Nick to her hometown in Tennessee to train him in the ways of country music, and the two gradually develop a unique bond despite their vastly different backgrounds and personalities. Along the way, Jake dresses Nick up in outlandish cowboy outfits and even gets him a rhinestone-studded suit to wear during his big performance.

When Nick finally takes the stage at the nightclub, he initially struggles to connect with the audience and is met with silence. But as he continues to sing, he gradually wins over the crowd with his surprising talent and innate charm. Jake watches on with pride, knowing she has successfully fulfilled her promise to turn an everyday person into a country star.

Rhinestone was released in 1984 and was mostly panned by critics, but it developed a cult following over the years for its quirky premise and comedic performances from Parton and Stallone. The film features several original songs written by Parton, including the memorable duet "Drinkenstein" which was later covered by Mattel Toys in a commercial for their Barbie line.
