New York trapper Tom Dobb (played by Al Pacino) is a man who is content with his simple life in the wilderness, away from the politics and dramas of the outside world. However, when his son Ned is conscripted into the British Army by the cruel and ruthless Sergeant Major Peasy (played by Donald Sutherland), Tom is forced to leave his peaceful existence and venture into the dangerous and uncertain world of the American Revolution.
Determined to find his son and bring him home, Tom travels to New York City, which is now occupied by British soldiers. Here he meets Daisy McConnahay (played by Nastassja Kinski), a wealthy and influential woman who is sympathetic to the revolutionary cause and is actively involved in the fight for freedom. Despite their initial differences in status and background, Tom and Daisy form a bond and begin to work together to help the rebels.
As Tom becomes more involved in the revolution, he witnesses the atrocities committed by the British soldiers against the colonialists, and begins to feel strongly that he must take a stand and fight for the freedom of the colonies. Through his experiences and interactions with other characters, including a young African-American slave and a fellow trapper, Tom learns the value of loyalty, sacrifice, and the importance of standing up for what he believes in.
The film depicts the major battles and events of the American Revolution, including the Battle of Saratoga and the infamous winter at Valley Forge. It also portrays the complex political and social issues of the time, including the divide between the American Patriots and Loyalists, and the struggles faced by slaves and Native Americans.
Despite its ambitious scope and impressive production values, Revolution was a critical and commercial flop upon its release in 1985, and is often cited as one of Al Pacino's least successful films. However, it remains an interesting and engaging historical drama, with strong performances and an engaging story that sheds light on an important moment in American history.
