Retroactive is a science fiction thriller film released in 1997. The movie follows Karen, a scientist and inventor, who develops a time machine that can send one person back in time for a limited duration. She is invited by a group of criminals to demonstrate her technology to them. While on a test run, a violent altercation takes place, and Karen gets thrown back in time. She soon discovers that she has landed five hours before the altercation and that she has a chance to prevent the incident from happening.
However, in her attempt to save the innocent victim, Karen unintentionally becomes responsible for a series of events that lead to the victim's murder. She is forcefully sent back in time again, only to find herself in a different timeline. In every new attempt, the outcome becomes worse, and she realizes that her actions have severe consequences.
Eventually, she teams up with Frank, an innocent man who is embroiled in the drama, to outsmart the criminals and save the victim's life. Throughout the movie, Karen repeatedly jumps through time, causing several identical versions of herself to appear, creating more confusion and tension. As she struggles to undo her mistakes, she learns that changing the past is not as easy as it seems, and that every decision has its price. The movie ends with Karen managing to reset the timeline, but not without significant moral and ethical dilemmas.
