Kate and Martin are a married couple who have suffered a personal tragedy, the loss of their child, and are struggling to come to terms with it. They decide to take a break from their regular lives and go to a remote island retreat, which is owned by Martin's former employer. The island is isolated and has no communication with the outside world. Kate is unsure of their decision but Martin reassures her that this is exactly what they need.
Upon arrival, they meet a caretaker named Doug, who welcomes them to the island and gives them a tour. Kate and Martin begin to settle in, but their peace is interrupted when a disheveled stranger, who they later learn is named Jack, washes ashore on the island. Jack tells them that there is an airborne disease that is killing people all over Europe and that they need to leave the island immediately.
Kate and Martin are skeptical at first, thinking that Jack might be a paranoid or delusional man. However, they soon come to realize that he is telling the truth when they hear a news report on the radio. They panic and start to prepare to leave the island, but things are not as they seem, as they soon learn the truth about Jack and the disease.
Retreat is a psychological thriller that explores the human psyche and how people react when faced with a crisis. The film stars Cillian Murphy as Martin, Thandie Newton as Kate, and Jamie Bell as Jack. It was directed by Carl Tibbetts and released in 2011.
