Jay Jackson (played by Josh Hartnett), is an ambitious sports reporter trying to step out of the shadow of his father, a famous boxing commentator. One day while on a walk, he stumbles upon a homeless man being beaten up in an alley. Jay intervenes, leading him to safety and takes him to his apartment to recover. The homeless man calls himself "Champ" (played by Samuel L. Jackson), and after a little bit of research, Jay realizes that he's actually a former heavyweight boxing champion who was believed to be dead.
Seeing an opportunity to resurrect Champ's story and produce a killer article, Jay convinces Champ to reveal his true identity. The article becomes a viral sensation, giving Jay the fame and recognition he craved. As Champ's story catches the attention of the boxing community, they start to rally behind the once-great fighter, offering him a training position and a chance to re-enter the ring. But as they spend more time together, Jay begins to realize that Champ's life story may not be as heroic as he once believed, and that his own father may not be the villain he always thought him to be.
