"Respect" is a biographical musical drama about the legendary singer and songwriter, Aretha Franklin. The movie portrays her incredible journey from a child singing in her father's church's choir to becoming an international superstar known as the "Queen of Soul".

The film begins with a young Aretha witnessing her mother, Barbara Siggers Franklin, walk out of their family home. Aretha's father, Reverend Clarence LaVaughn Franklin, guides her in finding her voice and encourages her to pursue a career in music. However, her father also becomes a hindrance as he is a strict and abusive disciplinarian who enforces control over her personal and professional life.

As Aretha grows older, she faces countless obstacles in her career, including sexism, racism, and personal struggles with addiction. Through sheer determination and her incredible talent, she overcomes these barriers to rise to fame. The film showcases her most iconic performances, including her rendition of "Respect" and other hit songs such as "Chain of Fools" and "Natural Woman".

Jennifer Hudson delivers a stellar performance as Aretha Franklin, capturing the essence of her performance style and mannerisms. The film also stars Forest Whitaker as Reverend Clarence LaVaughn Franklin, Marlon Wayans as Ted White, Aretha's abusive first husband, and Audra McDonald as Barbara Siggers Franklin, Aretha's mother.
