After being fired from his job as an advertising executive in Detroit, Bill Rago (played by Danny DeVito) reluctantly takes a job teaching a group of Army recruits at a local base. The job is only temporary, and Bill is in desperate need of money to support his family.
Upon arrival at the base, Bill is shocked to find out that there is no clear curriculum or structure in place for his class. He is given a group of young men who are struggling academically and have no interest in learning. The young men are also mischievous and troublemakers who make it difficult for Bill to gain control of the class.
Despite the challenges, Bill begins to develop a rapport with the young men. He introduces them to poetry, literature, and other creative subjects, which they had never been exposed to before. Slowly but surely, he earns their respect and trust.
As the class progresses, Bill realizes that he has become deeply invested in the success and futures of his students. He develops a strong bond with them, and they begin to respect and care for him in return.
However, when a superior officer decides that the class is not meeting Army standards, Bill is threatened with the loss of his job. He must fight to keep his position while also ensuring that his students are well-prepared for the real world.
Renaissance Man is a heartwarming and inspirational film about the power of education and the impact of a dedicated teacher.
