The movie follows Rudy Duncan (Affleck), a former convict who is about to be released from prison for Christmas. Before he leaves, he strikes up a conversation with his cellmate Nick (James Frain), who tells him about his beautiful girlfriend Ashley (Theron) and how he plans to spend Christmas with her. However, after Nick is killed in a fight, Rudy decides to assume his identity and go to meet Ashley.

Ashley is initially suspicious of Rudy's true identity but eventually accepts him. The two plan to spend Christmas together, but their plans are interrupted when Ashley's brother Gabriel (Sinise) and his team of criminals arrive at their cabin and force Rudy to participate in a casino robbery.
