Red Sparrow is a 2018 spy thriller film directed by Francis Lawrence, based on the novel of the same name by Jason Matthews. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence as Dominika Egorova, Joel Edgerton as James E. "Nate" Nash, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Ivan Dimitrevich Egorov.
Dominika, a prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Ballet, suffers a career-ending injury that sends her life into a spiral. She is recruited by her uncle, a high-ranking official in Russian intelligence, to attend Sparrow School – a secret training facility that transforms young people into highly skilled spies known as "Sparrows." The training is brutal and dehumanizing, with Dominika being forced to use her body as a tool of seduction and manipulation.
After completing her training, Dominika is tasked with seducing and extracting information from Nate, a CIA agent who has been aiding a high-ranking Russian official in leaking classified information. As she gets closer to Nate, she begins to question her loyalty to Russia and her own values. Meanwhile, Nate risks everything to protect her and help her defect to the United States.
The film features a complex plot and intense scenes of violence and sexual assault. It explores themes of power, control, and identity, with Jennifer Lawrence's powerful performance at the center of it all.
