The 2000 film Red Planet is set in the year 2056, where Earth is on the brink of ecological collapse due to overpopulation and pollution. A team of six astronauts is sent to Mars on a mission to find a way to terraform the planet so that it can be habitable for humans.

As the crew approaches Mars, their spacecraft suffers a catastrophic malfunction and crash lands on the planet's surface. The team's commander, Kate Bowman (played by Carrie-Anne Moss), begins to investigate the cause of the failure while the rest of the crew works on finding a way to survive on the barren and inhospitable planet.

As they explore the Martian terrain, the crew begins to notice strange patterns and anomalies that suggest there may be life on the planet. However, as they delve deeper into their investigations, they realize that the life forms they have encountered are not in fact friendly, and they soon find themselves in a fight for survival.

In the course of their battle for survival, the crew must also contend with the growing realization that their mission to terraform Mars may actually be contributing to the ecological collapse of Earth. As they struggle to find a way to return home, the crew must confront their fears, their conflicting loyalties, and the harsh reality of a universe that is often hostile to human ambition. In the end, some of the crew members make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that others can return home safely.
