In Red Dawn, the invading force is a coalition of North Korean and Russian troops, who have launched a surprise attack on the United States. The focus of the film is on a group of high school students, led by brothers Jed (Chris Hemsworth) and Matt (Josh Peck), who are forced to flee their homes when the invasion occurs. After discovering that their father has been taken captive, they head to the nearby mountains and begin training in guerrilla warfare in order to fight back against the occupying forces.
While hiding out in the woods, the group is joined by several other teenagers and adults who have also fled the town. Together, they mount a series of attacks against the enemy, targeting supply lines, communications centers, and other key infrastructure. They also attempt to rescue prisoners from a nearby internment camp, including Jed and Matt's father.
As the group becomes more skilled in their tactics, they gradually attract the attention of the occupying forces, who begin to hunt them down more aggressively. The situation is further complicated by a traitor in their midst, who is feeding information to the enemy.
Throughout the film, there are several moments of tension and drama, including a romantic subplot between Jed and a fellow rebel, and a dramatic confrontation between Jed and the Russian commander in charge of the occupation.
Ultimately, the rebels are successful in inflicting significant damage on the enemy, and are able to inspire other resistance fighters across the country. The film ends with the group continuing their fight, determined to see their country liberated from the foreign invaders.
