Red Angel is a 1966 Japanese film directed by Yasuzo Masumura. The movie is set during the Sino-Japanese war, and it follows the story of Sakura Nishi, a young army nurse who gets sent to a hospital in China to assist the surgeon Dr. Okabe.
Sakura and Dr. Okabe are immediately thrown into the midst of the brutal war, and they are tasked with performing a huge number of amputations on wounded soldiers. As they work side by side, Sakura develops feelings for the drugged-up surgeon, who is struggling to cope with his addiction to morphine.
As the war rages on, Sakura becomes more and more invested in the fate of the soldiers she is caring for. She spends time with them, offering comfort and kindness in the midst of their suffering. One of the soldiers she becomes close to is a young man who has lost both arms and has no hope of returning home. Sakura even offers herself to him sexually, as a way of easing his pain and loneliness.
Throughout the film, we see the toll that the war takes on both Sakura and Dr. Okabe. They are forced to confront death and violence on a daily basis, and they struggle to reconcile their sense of duty with their own personal desires and needs.
