Rear Window is a 1954 American suspense thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly, and Thelma Ritter. The film is based on a short story by Cornell Woolrich and is considered one of Hitchcock's greatest works.
The film's protagonist, L.B. "Jeff" Jeffries (Stewart), is a professional photographer who is wheelchair-bound after breaking his leg during a risky assignment. Confined to his Greenwich Village apartment, Jeff becomes fixated on the lives of his neighbors, whom he observes through his rear window telescope.
As Jeff becomes more engrossed in his neighbors' lives, he begins to suspect that one of them has committed murder. His suspicions are further aroused when the man's wife suddenly disappears, and he sees the man acting strangely with a large suitcase.
Jeff shares his concerns with his girlfriend, Lisa (Kelly), and his nurse, Stella (Ritter). Together, they begin investigating the potential murder, using clues gathered through their observations of the suspect's behavior.
The tension builds towards the climax of the film, when Jeff and Lisa break into the suspect's apartment to search for evidence. The final scene sees Jeff confronting the suspect, who comes dangerously close to discovering Jeff's presence.
Rear Window explores themes of voyeurism, suspicion, and the fine line between observation and intrusion. The film is noted for its innovative use of limited perspective and the intense performances of its lead actors. It has since become a classic of the thriller genre, and a cherished work in Hitchcock's canon.
