Re-Animator is a horror film released in 1985 and directed by Stuart Gordon. It is based on the H.P. Lovecraft short story "Herbert West–Reanimator" and tells the story of Herbert West, a medical student who believes that he can bring back the dead. He develops a serum which can reanimate dead tissue and starts experimenting on corpses at the medical college where he and his fellow student, Dan Cain, study.

Dan is initially hesitant to get involved in the experiments but is eventually won over by Herbert's obsession and determination. They start with small experiments on animals but eventually move onto humans, leading to increasingly dire consequences. Along the way, they are aided by Megan, Dan's girlfriend who becomes drawn into their dangerous world.

Things take a dark turn when a new student arrives on campus, Dr. Carl Hill, who becomes obsessed with Herbert's formula and the power it could give him. The rivalry between Herbert and Carl comes to a head in a bizarre and gruesome final confrontation.

The film is known for its dark humor, gruesome special effects, and over-the-top performances, particularly by the lead actor, Jeffrey Combs, who plays Herbert West. It has since become a cult classic and spawned two sequels, Bride of Re-Animator and Beyond Re-Animator.
