Rashomon is a 1950 Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa. The movie is set in feudal Japan, where a woodcutter (played by Takashi Shimura) and a priest (played by Minoru Chiaki) take shelter under the ruined Rashomon gate during a rainstorm. While they wait, they are joined by a cynical commoner (played by Kichijiro Ueda) and a nobleman (played by Masayuki Mori).
The men begin to discuss a recent murder trial they had witnessed, in which a samurai was killed and his wife was raped by a bandit. However, as they each recount their version of events, it becomes clear that their stories differ significantly. The woodcutter claims to have found the body of the samurai, while the priest claims to have met the victim earlier that day. The commoner claims to have witnessed the crime, while the nobleman tells his own tale of events.
