Helen Harris's life takes an unexpected turn when her sister Lindsay and brother-in-law Paul die in a car accident, leaving behind three kids. In their will, they named Helen as the guardian of their children, which forces her to leave behind her party lifestyle and move from Manhattan to Queens to become a full-time mom.
Helen struggles to balance her new responsibilities with her job as a fashion executive, which she’s worked very hard to build. Her youngest charge, Sarah, refuses to talk to her, and her older brother and sister, Henry and Audrey are also struggling with the death of their parents. Helen receives support from her friend and coworker Nilma and from Pastor Dan Parker, who runs the church that Lindsay and Paul attended.
As the children adjust to their new life, Helen begins to develop feelings for Pastor Dan, but she finds out he's engaged. Meanwhile, Sarah opens up to Helen after confronting her about the way she’s been handling Lindsay and Paul’s death, and Helen's work suffers because of the amount of time she's missed out on her new responsibilities as a mother.
After a long struggle and plenty of mistakes, Helen finds her footing and manages to strike a balance between motherhood, work, and romance, but not without learning a few hard lessons along the way. Ultimately, the movie shows the importance of family and that sometimes the road to happiness is not what you envisioned.
