Titanic Unearthed: Quest for the Rare Mineral

Action,Drama,Thriller  United Kingdom

Raise the Titanic is a 1980 American action-adventure film directed by Jerry Jameson. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Clive Cussler. The film stars Jason Robards, Richard Jordan, David Selby, Anne Archer, and Alec Guinness.

The story is set in the year 1980, where the United States is facing a critical shortage of a rare mineral called Byzanium. It is discovered that the Titanic, the famous ocean liner that sank in 1912, was carrying a large quantity of this mineral in its hold. The only way to obtain the mineral is to raise the Titanic from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

The operation is led by Admiral James Sandecker (Jason Robards) of the National Underwater Marine Agency (NUMA), and he brings in expert marine architect Dr. John Bigelow (Richard Jordan) to oversee the operation. The plan involves using a specially designed submarine to attach giant steel cables to the Titanic and lift it to the surface.

As the operation proceeds, the team encounters numerous difficulties and setbacks. They face challenges such as navigating through stormy seas, avoiding enemy submarines, and dealing with technical problems with the equipment. Meanwhile, a group of Soviet agents is also trying to get their hands on the Byzanium.

Eventually, the Titanic is successfully raised to the surface, but it is revealed that the Byzanium had disintegrated over time and is no longer usable. The mission ends in failure, and the team is forced to scuttle the ship back to the ocean floor.

Despite the film's impressive budget and promising premise, Raise the Titanic was a critical and commercial failure, grossing only $7 million against its budget of $40 million. However, the movie has since gained a cult following among fans of the action-adventure genre.
