Quills is a 2000 film directed by Philip Kaufman and starring Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, and Michael Caine. The film is loosely based on the life of the Marquis de Sade, a French nobleman and infamous writer known for his erotic and often violent works.

The movie is set in 18th century France, where the Marquis de Sade (Geoffrey Rush) is incarcerated in the Charenton Asylum for the Insane. While in the asylum, he continues to write his controversial works, but they are confiscated by the asylum's director, Abbe Coulmier (Joaquin Phoenix). However, Coulmier's naive and beautiful wife (Kate Winslet) becomes fascinated by the Marquis's writing and encourages a laundry maid (Amelia Warner) to smuggle his manuscripts out of the asylum and have them printed.

As the Marquis's writing gains popularity in Paris, it draws the attention of Dr. Royer-Collard (Michael Caine), a conservative doctor who is determined to silence him. With the backing of Napoleon Bonaparte, who sees the Marquis's work as a dangerous influence on French society, Royer-Collard seeks to have the writer silenced by any means necessary.

The film deals with themes of censorship, power, and the nature of freedom and expression. It earned critical acclaim for its performances, particularly Geoffrey Rush's portrayal of the Marquis de Sade. Despite its controversial subject matter, it was also praised for its nuanced exploration of the Marquis's psychology and the historical context in which he lived.

Quills was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Geoffrey Rush. It remains a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of the intersection between art and power in society.
