Rebel Chariots: Betrayal in Ancient Rome

Comedy  France

Quarter to Two Before Jesus Christ (or "Deux heures moins le quart avant Jésus-Christ" in its original French title) is a French-Italian comedy film released in 1982. The film is directed by Jean Yanne, who also co-wrote the screenplay and stars as the main character, Ben-Hur Marcel. The film is set in ancient Rome and tells the story of a small-time chariot racer named Ben-Hur Marcel who becomes mixed up in a plot to overthrow Julius Caesar.

The film begins with Ben-Hur Marcel living a simple life in the Roman colony of Rahatlocum, where he races his chariot for a living. However, when Julius Caesar (played by Michel Serrault) comes to visit the town, he brings with him a corrupt governor who rules with an iron fist. The people of Rahatlocum are fed up with the governor's tyranny and begin to plot a rebellion.

When Ben-Hur Marcel overhears the governor's plans to assassinate Julius Caesar, he joins forces with the rebels and becomes their leader. However, things quickly spiral out of control as the rebels' plan goes awry and they find themselves facing off against Caesar's army.

Despite its historical setting, Quarter to Two Before Jesus Christ is a comedy first and foremost, with plenty of slapstick humor and satirical jabs at the Roman Empire. The film also features an eclectic cast of characters, including a group of hippies who worship the god Bacchus and a bumbling centurion named Marcus Vampa who becomes Ben-Hur Marcel's sidekick.

Overall, Quarter to Two Before Jesus Christ is a lighthearted romp through ancient Rome that offers plenty of laughs and a unique take on the classic tale of rebellion against a tyrannical ruler.
