The creature in question is a genetically modified python that was created by a group of scientists in a top secret lab. They intended to use it as a weapon, but things quickly spiral out of control when the snake escapes and begins to wreak havoc on the town.
As the body count rises, a small group of brave townspeople band together to try and stop the python before it can cause any more damage. They are aided by a herpetologist who has experience dealing with snakes, as well as a rogue FBI agent who is pursuing the scientists responsible for creating the monster.
The snake itself is an impressive special effect, with its massive size and realistic movements bringing a sense of terror to each scene it appears in. The filmmakers wisely keep the creature mostly in the shadows, only revealing it in quick glimpses until the final showdown.
