The accountant, Eugene Proctor (played by Martin Short), is sent to Mexico to find the missing daughter of his boss. He is accompanied by a tough, no-nonsense Mexican detective, Raymond Campanella (played by Danny Glover).
Eugene's bad luck starts within minutes of his arrival as he accidentally drops his luggage out of the car and a truck runs over it. However, he and Raymond continue their search, despite numerous mishaps, misunderstandings, and misadventures.
As they follow the clues, they encounter a variety of eccentric and bizarre characters including local bandits, a voodoo priestess, and a pair of flamboyant American tourists.
Eventually, Eugene's bad luck turns into good luck as he stumbles upon a lead that could lead them to the missing girl. In the end, Eugene and Raymond are able to rescue the girl and bring her back to her relieved father.
