The movie opens with a man named Ed Harley living a quiet life with his young son, Billy, in a remote cabin in the woods. One day, a group of reckless teenagers riding dirt bikes accidentally runs over and kills Billy while he is playing outside. Devastated by his loss, Ed seeks out a powerful witch who lives deep in the woods and asks her to conjure up a demon to avenge his son's death.
The witch warns Ed that summoning a demon will have dire consequences, but he is too consumed by grief and anger to listen. She performs a ritual and calls forth a towering and terrifying creature known as Pumpkinhead. Ed commands the demon to seek out and destroy the teenagers responsible for Billy's death.
One by one, the teenagers begin to meet gruesome and brutal ends at the hands of Pumpkinhead. However, as the body count rises, Ed begins to realize the true cost of his vengeance. He is plagued by visions of his son and haunted by the demon that he has unleashed.
As the final survivor seeks shelter in a nearby church, Ed confronts Pumpkinhead and realizes that the only way to put an end to the bloodshed is to sacrifice himself. He begs the witch to undo the demon's curse and make things right, but it is too late. The demon drags Ed away into the darkness, and the movie ends with the witch warning that those who summon Pumpkinhead must be careful what they wish for.
