Promise at Dawn is a 2017 French biographical romantic drama directed by Eric Barbier and based on the novel of the same name by Romain Gary. The movie follows the life of Romain Gary, born Roman Kacew, from his childhood in Poland, to his adolescence in Nice, his years as a student in Paris, and his tough training as a pilot during World War II.
As a child, Roman is raised by his overbearing mother, Nina, who instills in him the belief that he will become a great writer. After moving to France, Roman changes his name to Romain Gary and struggles to make a living as a writer.
