Promise at Dawn is a 2017 French biographical romantic drama directed by Eric Barbier and based on the novel of the same name by Romain Gary. The movie follows the life of Romain Gary, born Roman Kacew, from his childhood in Poland, to his adolescence in Nice, his years as a student in Paris, and his tough training as a pilot during World War II.

As a child, Roman is raised by his overbearing mother, Nina, who instills in him the belief that he will become a great writer. Despite his mother's constant pressure and criticism, Roman remains devoted to her and promised to fulfill her dream of seeing him become a famous writer. After moving to France, Roman changes his name to Romain Gary and struggles to make a living as a writer. He also falls in love with actress Lesley Blanch, but their relationship is cut short when the Second World War breaks out.

As the war intensifies, Romain becomes a fighter pilot for Britain's Royal Air Force. During his training, he meets and falls in love with fellow pilot, Aida. Despite their shared love of flying, their relationship is complicated by Romain's commitment to his mother and his vow to make her proud.

The movie is a sweeping love story and a portrait of an artist's struggle to fulfill his destiny. It explores themes of mother-son relationships, love, war, and the pursuit of greatness. The film received positive reviews and was nominated for several awards, including the César Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
