Junior and his father Ben Healy move from Cold River to Mortville, a small town where Ben has taken up a job as a schoolteacher. Junior struggles to adjust to his new surroundings, and becomes increasingly threatened by his father's desire to move on from his late wife and find a new mother for Junior. He sabotages each of Ben's dates by creating elaborate stunts, such as exploding toilets and spiders in the soup.
Meanwhile, a new family moves into town - the Murphys - and their son Trixie catches Junior's eye. However, Trixie already has a boyfriend, a bully named Murph, who torments Junior and his friends. Junior seeks revenge by creating a series of pranks on Murph, culminating in a showdown at a carnival.
As the movie progresses, Ben becomes increasingly disillusioned with his dating prospects, while Junior starts to realize that he may have been too harsh on his father's potential partners. He also realizes that he may have feelings for Trixie, and starts to re-evaluate his actions towards her.
In the end, Ben finds love with a new woman, and Junior learns to accept her as his new mother. The movie ends with Junior and his friends enjoying a carefree summer, while Ben and his new partner look on.
