Princess Yang Kwei-fei was released in 1955 and directed by Kenji Mizoguchi. The film is based on the historical event of Emperor Xuanzong’s affair with his concubine Yang Guifei, which resulted in the downfall of the Tang dynasty.

The film begins with the death of Emperor Xuanzong's beloved wife and his subsequent grief. The powerful Yang family sees an opportunity to consolidate their power and influence by offering the Emperor a new consort. They discover a distant relative, Yang Kwei-fei (played by Machiko Kyô), working in their kitchen and begin to groom her for the position.

Yang Kwei-fei is hesitant to accept the offer, but the promise of wealth and power convinces her to become the Emperor's consort. As she gains favor with the Emperor, the Yang family are appointed important ministers, further increasing their power.

However, the ministers' corruption and misuse of power lead to widespread resentment among the people, and a popular revolt against the Yang family is fueled by the military rebel leader An Lushan (played by Eitarô Shindô). The film shows the downfall of the Yang family, the Emperor's deep remorse for causing their destruction and the tragedy of Yang Kwei-fei's fate.
